I vaguely recall a time when literacy was no more than a simple synonym in my mind for the ability to read. What I have found (and not surprisingly) is that this concept has become increasingly complex for me and slid into a somewhat nebulous state. Right now, I think of literacy much in the way that James Gee defines discourses - that is as ways of thinking, acting, feeling, being, etc. within society.

My definition is always changing but for now...
Literacy is the means by which humans communicate ideas.
